Debate over the possible existence of pre-initials in Old Chinese is one example of the scholastic divide between Chinese historical phonologists working with the methodology of Western historical linguistics, and classical Chinese philology. I give an overview of this issue as a post-hoc rationalisation of going to a summer school way too difficult for me.
